This is the day to remember this man...

Gr-grandpa Patrick J. O'Brien, killed in a mining accident on August 21, 1890.
He was 56-years-old.  RIP, P.J.

  1. He looks older than 56. Are you sure that's the right Patrick O'Brien?

  2. He DOES seem older than 56. That's true, Donna. But shave the beard, rub a little Grecian Formula into his hair, put him in a Cox Classic golf shirt, and voila! you've got a much younger man. Another consideration: Patrick worked for about a quarter-century UNDERGROUND as a copper miner. That was about 12 hours a day, six days a week. When he left for work in the morning, it was still dark out. A half-mile down into the earth it was dark (except for the candle each man had attached to his hat). And when he emerged at the end of the day, it was usually dark. No wonder he looked so old!

  3. They had nice clothes to work in back then.
    And don't call me Donna.

  4. Dear Donn, er, Anonymous,

Yes, they dressed very well in Calumet in those days, as there was a wonderful haberdashery in town called The Stile Shopp. It was owned by an
    Italian tailor who couldn't spell.
